“Bri, you okay?” Henry picked up the basketball that rolled right to him and dribbled it slowly.

“Fine.” I snatched the ball from his dribble and did a layup.

Henry took the ball out and then he made a free throw. Nothing but net. “Yeah, I don’t think so. What’s going on?”

“I have a thing for Tru.” The words were out of my mouth before I could stop myself.

But nothing could stop Henry’s fist from trying to make a crater in the center of my face. I hit the ground and saw stars.

“Fuck,” Henry snarled shaking his fist. “Your head is made of granite.”

“Well, good, then maybe your steel fist will be dented,” I growled. “What the fuck?”

“How long?” Henry barked.

“I don’t know. Years, I guess.”

He paused, his hard expression faltering. “Years?”

“Yeah.”

“You ever make a move?”

“Not until last weekend.”

This time I tried to avoid his fist, but I wasn’t fast enough. Another punch, but the impact was less as I stumbled backwards.

“Fuck!” This time I kept my distance from him. “Just get it over with, Hank. Tell me to stay the fuck away from your sister.”

Henry raked his fingers through his hair. “Guys have not been nice to her.”

“I know.”

“In fact, they treat her like shit a lot of the time. And Tru’s not as confident as she likes to pretend. I know they’ve hurt her. She hasn’t even bounced back from the last one. Did you like her through all of that bullshit?”

“Yes.”

“You let her suffer like that?”

“Wait…what?”

Henry shook his head. “You’re my best friend. We’re practically brothers. I think the world of you. Did you think I would be pissed if you went out with my sister?”

“Well…yeah. And the bruises forming on my face would agree with me.”

Henry sighed. “I’m pissed at you for not saying something sooner. I always knew she had a thing for you, but I didn’t think you were interested in her. And she doesn’t think you’re interested in her. Why is this coming up now?”

I didn’t know how to tell him what happened at the costume shop. “I hit on her before I realized it was her. She was in a mask and a wig. She didn’t look like herself at first. I was a little forward and when I figured it out, it was too late.”

“Wait…were you in a mask too or something?”

“No, that’s the thing.”

Henry smirked. “Wait, you know you hit on her, she knows you hit on her, but neither of you knows the other one knows that you know?”

I blinked at him a few times. “I’m not sure I really followed all of that, but yeah, I don’t think she has any idea that I figured out it was her.”

He shook his head. “She must be going crazy.”

“Not crazy enough, if she’s going to the ball with Scott McDouche in there.”

“He seemed like a nice enough guy,” Henry defended.

“Whose side are you on?” I growled.

“Currently, Tru’s side. What are you going to do?”

“I told her I would see her at the masquerade tomorrow.
